About Susanna Karlsson

I am a senior lecturer and teach sociolinguistics, conversation analysis, and language policy and planning.

In 2006 I defended my doctoral thesis on epistemic expressions in conversaion, especially with a focus on phrases such as I think, I believe, I mean. For this study, I worked witihin the field of Interactional Linguistics, combining analysis of prosody and syntaxt with the methods of Conversation Analysis. Since then I have been a postdoctoral researcher at Universität Potsdam, a lecturer at Lund University, and most recently a language planner at the Swedish Language Council.

My research interests are mainly in the fields of Conversaion Analysis, Emergent Grammar and Language Policy and Planning.

I coordinate the research profile Text och kontext.

I am currently involved in the following projects:

  • Attitudes to variation and language planning: Together with Lena Lind Palicki (SU), I study issues in standardization which seems to trigger exceptionally strong reactions from the general public. Presently, our focus lies on the public debate around the spelling of the demonstrative pronoun dom (de/dem) från 1904 to the present, as well as variations in the current usage.
  • Language policy and planning in Swedish higher education: Working together with researchers from the field of Public Administration, I analyse language policy documents from Swedish universities.
