Swedish as a second language

Research in Second language acquisition (SLA), i.e. research on how people learn and use a language which is not their first language, is a relatively young field of research. Issues concerning multilingualism in both individuals and various groups in society have become more and more relevant in the context of increasing globalization and today’s multicultural societies. Swedish as a second language is therefore am area with high relevance within both research and education.

SLA includes a range of different research areas like linguistics and language didactics. Hence, the research at our department is concerned with second language learning as well as second language development and second language use in different kinds of contexts such as education in Swedish as a second language in primary, secondary school and adult, and higher education.

At the department we have the Institute for Swedish as a second language (ISA) carrying out research- and development projects within the field. ISA is also functioning as a link between the department and different operators within the education system and expert networks within the field at both national, Nordic and international level. The Department of Swedish offers education in Swedish as a second language undergraduate level and since 2008 even a master program. The only PhD program in Swedish as a second language is also situated at our department.
